Broadcasting classics like Reading Rainbow and new favorites like Curious George, PBS has been nominated for more Daytime Emmy Awards than any other network.
The Daytime Emmy Nominations for Children’s Programming were honored during a special ceremony for children’s television on February 7 at the Kidscreen Summit. Nominated for Outstanding Children’s Animated Program are the teams behind Arthur (PBS), Curious George (PBS), Peep and the Big Wide World (DSC Kids), Time Warp Trio (NBC), and Todd World (DSC Kids). Movie giant Ron Howard is an executive producer of Curious George while Oscar nominee William H. Macy serves as narrator. Arthur is controversial in parenting circles, with some parents believing that the show promotes negative sibling relationships. It’s clear that the animated series based on the books by Marc Brown has earned the respect of industry professionals.
Nominees for Outstanding Directing in a Children’s Series were Lazytown (NICK), Sesame Street (PBS), and It’s a Big, Big World (PBS). Levar Burton of Reading Rainbow is one of three individuals nominated for Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series. Caroll Spinney who plays Oscar the Grouch and Kevin Clash who provides the voice of Elmo on Sesame Street join Burton in that category. Only two programs, Sesame Street and Reading Rainbow, were nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Children’s Series. Sesame Street leads the pack almost 40 years after its debut with five Emmy Nominations.
