Princess Protection Program is a delightful made-for-television movie that appeals to viewers of all ages.

Princess Protection Program begins with the introduction of Carter Mason (Selena Gomez), who works at her father’s bait shop and detests the popular people at her school, with the exception of one boy: Donny (Robert Adamson). Donny however, does not even remember her name after nearly ten years of going to school with her. To add insult to injury, Donny’s catty girlfriend makes life even harder for Carter by deliberately snubbing her and turning her into the joke of the school.

While Carter deals the best that she can with her problems, her father, Joe (Tom Verica), has to solve some problems of his own. As a secret agent, Joe must rescue Princess Rosalina (Demi Lovato) from her country of Costa Luna because an evil dictator from a neighboring country wants Costa Luna for his own. Rosalina is the only heir to the throne, and must therefore be removed from the country immediately, in order to keep her from harm.

When Rosalina, now dubbed “Rosie”, is brought back to Louisiana to live with Carter and her father, things get tense between the two girls. Carter, who cannot stand princesses, whether they be real princesses or just the snotty, spoiled girls from her high school, does not care much for Rosie, who is confused by even the simplest of concepts in the “real” world, such as cheeseburgers and homecoming dances. Things are made worse by the fact that Carter begins to feel that Rosie is trying to steal everything from her, such as her friends at school, her job, and even the affection of her father.

Soon she overcomes her jealously, however, for Rosie tells her of her past and the two finally connect. Once they become friends, the two must figure out a way to save Rosie’s country and get rid of the man trying to conquer it, all while getting ready for the all-important homecoming dance.

A Film For Everyone

Princess Protection Program is an adorable, yet predictable, film. With the exception of a few unnecessary characters and the overdone theme of popularity versus outcast status, the film is an enjoyable one, and the concept is interesting. The chemistry between Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez is great, and it makes for a very cute movie.

The ending is a little abrupt, however, and it leaves the audience with a lot of questions and no concrete answers. Other than that, the film is fun to watch, and it can be enjoyed by both children and their parents.
