Two of Sesame Street's loveable characters get together for some birthday fun and learn about each other's traditions.

Birthday fun is in the air on Sesame Street when Elmo’s pet fish Dorothy celebrates her special day. Abby, being a fairy-in-training, has a different background than Elmo, and she has never experienced a Sesame Street birthday party.

Elmo teaches Abby about all the games they play and she learns about piñatas and how to pin the tail on the donkey. She also learns about birthday presents, party favors, and pointed hats.

A Birthday Party in Abby’s Fairytale Land

Abby takes Elmo to Fairytale Land where she teaches him about how they celebrate a fairytale birthday. Their games are much different and Elmo learns about pulling a plum out of a pie and fetching a pail. Along with Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and Jill, Elmo has a great time with Abby in Fairytale Land, where everyone wears a flower hat. He learns that instead of presents, everyone at a Fairytale-land birthday party gets a birthday wish.

DVD Bonus Features

The DVD contains some hints for parents to help them with fun things for their own children’s birthday parties. There is a downloadable workbook with fifteen pages of activities and story sheets.

Another bonus feature is an episode of “Elmo’s World: Birthdays,” when everyone gathers to celebrate Baby Bear’s birthday. His games are different too. Instead of pinning the tail on the donkey, everyone at his party pins the spoon on the porridge bowl.

This DVD is filled with fun for youngsters as well as new ideas for parents. Birthday parties are often elaborate and extravagant. In these days with a tough economy parents can find new ways of throwing birthday parties for their kids. Sometimes the simpler parties are the best.

While many people hire clowns and ponies, or stage the party in a special location, Abby and Elmo teach everyone that just being with friends and doing simple things can be just as fun. The DVD suggests that parents take their children to the library where they can read about how other people celebrate their birthdays. As Elmo and Abby demonstrate on this disc, there are many different ways to celebrate and different cultures have their own customs and traditions.

Perhaps trying something new this year for a child’s birthday will make it more memorable than the old dog and pony show. The booklet that comes along with the DVD contains a birthday party planner and some ideas for making party goody bags. Birthdays are special days which kids look forward to year after year. Making it memorable is always a parent’s desire.
