Many were skeptical about the Disney Channel original series Jonas. But is there more to this show than meets the eye?

When word came out that Disney Channel was producing a television series starring the Jonas Brothers, only devoted Jonas fans seemed excited by the news. For the rest of us, it was hard not to be skeptical. With a few exceptions, musicians are not actors, and watching them try to be can be downright painful. And did the world really need another badly acted, probably unfunny, sitcom?

Well Jonas premiered on Disney Channel on May 2, 2009. And, several episodes into its run, the series is showing more potential than most probably expected. In fact, many are discovering that you don’t have to be a Jonas fan to enjoy Jonas.

Jonas Brothers Portray Pop Stars Trying to Lead Normal Lives

Jonas stars Joe Jonas, Kevin Jonas and Nick Jonas as three brothers who are members of a popular band called…well, Jonas. Much like Hannah Montana, these brothers are determined to lead normal lives despite their immense fame. But, unlike Hannah, they don’t have double identities to hide behind. Everyone knows who they are. So even doing something as simple as taking out the trash is fraught with danger. After all, they never know when they’ll be spotted by an overeager Jonas fan.

The brothers’ closest friend is Stella (Chelsea Staub), who adores fashion and acts as the stylist for the band. Stella has known them forever, so has no trouble treating them like “regular guys.”

Macy (Nicole Anderson) is another story. She is Stella’s best friend and the school’s star athlete. She’s also a huge Jonas fan. When a Jonas is nearby, Macy transforms from a graceful athlete into a tongue-tied klutz. And a danger to anyone nearby. (Ask Kevin, who decided to talk to Macy while she was holding a javelin.)

Jonas TV Show Has a Monkees Vibe

Anyone who’s watched The Monkees will get a similar vibe from Jonas. Both shows are about the wacky adventures of a popular band. And both take place in a slightly surreal world where reality is a little skewed. And this skewed reality is treated as normal. No one bats an eye when a dog, tired of listening to Kevin’s guitar playing, unplugs his amp. Or when Stella comes to school wearing a sweater made partially of grass. (It’s the height of fashion…and environmentally friendly.) Or when an excited Jonas fan rips Joe’s clothes to shreds.

Of course, the show isn’t perfect. The Jonas Brothers aren’t experienced actors, and sometimes it shows. However, Joe, Kevin and Nick seem to improve with each episode, something that will probably continue as the show goes on.

Is Jonas a great television show? Maybe not. But it is an entertaining show, and one you can enjoy without being a Jonas fan. Watch an episode, and you’ll be surprised how often Jonas makes you laugh. And isn’t that all anyone really wants from a sitcom?

You can catch new episodes of Jonas Sunday nights at 8:30 Eastern on Disney Channel.
