Nickelodeon, in partnership with Produce for Kids, is launching a new campaign that will use favorite TV characters to encourage children to eat more fruits and veggies.

Nickelodeon has joined Produce for Kids in the effort to encourage children to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. Children who are used to seeing favorite TV characters like Dora the Explorer in the cereal aisle may be surprised to see images of her near the veggies. Produce for Kids is an organization that works to educate children and parents about the importance of healthy food and exercise. Children who join the “Healthy Kids Club” pledge to improve their lifestyle by making better choices such as exercising more and eating healthier foods. The Produce for Kids website features tips for parents and children as well as activity pages for older children that can be downloaded for free.

Nickelodeon’s partnership with Produce for Kids will complement its “Let’s Just Play” health and wellness campaign that’s already in place. The “Go Healthy Challenge for 2007” is currently requesting audition tapes from kids who are interested in having their story featured on Nickelodeon. Nickelodeon will spend more than $30 million dollars and will commit 10% of its airtime to helping children make healthier choices. The children’s network is also part of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation which is a national organization committed to fighting childhood obesity.

Nickelodeon has also recently announced a plan to put characters such as Dora and Spongebob Squarepants on packages of peaches, cherries, and other produce in order to make fruits and vegetables more appealing to children. Picky eaters who may be resistant to natural foods may be more willing to try them if familiar characters are on the package. Since Nickelodeon is the highest rated cable network, the new campaign is sure to reach millions of families.
