Aardman Animations Claymation Funny Halloween Video Review

Sep 30, 2009 Renee Carver

The Shaun the Sheep Little Sheep of Horrors DVD is a funny Halloween video for kids full of spooky situations and family-friendly Halloween entertainment.

The Shaun the Sheep: Little Sheep of Horrors DVD will delight parents looking for family-friendly Halloween entertainment that is spooky but not too frightening. This Shaun the Sheep DVD collects six episodes of the popular and funny Aardman Animations Claymation kids tv show that are full of spooky situations, magic, and some scary surprises.

Aardman Animations Shaun the Sheep Kids TV Show

Full of Aardman Animations' trademark sly wit and clever visual references, each Shaun the Sheep episode entertains viewers both young and old with silent slapstick comedy and exaggerated situations that still manage to keep one foot in reality. This is a kids TV show that the whole family can enjoy together.

Shaun himself is a bright sheep full of creative ideas who lives on a small farm with the rest of his flock. Other characters include the sheepdog Bitzer who looks after the sheep and often gets sucked into participating in Shaun's latest scheme, and the slightly dimwitted Farmer, who never really understands the extent of the mischief Shaun and the other barnyard animals get into.

Shaun the Sheep Halloween Episodes

For the most part, none of the Shaun the Sheep episodes gathered on the Little Sheep of Horrors DVD deal directly with Halloween subjects such as trick or treating, pumpkins, or costumes. Instead, they have in common themes of horror, fright, and unusual or spooky situations. In some episodes the characters are scared by eerie noises and night frights, while in others they are menaced by more tangible threats, like a neighboring angry bull.

In Little Sheep of Horrors, Timmy the baby sheep slips inside the Farmer's house one night and the rest of the sheep, followed closely by Bitzer, must sneak down the chimney to retrieve him. Suspense builds and is released as the characters try to hide from the Farmer and end up scaring each other into screaming fits. This episode is full of spooky moments and funny surprises, but even with the inclusion of a quick Psycho parody, it is completely kid-friendly.

In Abracadabra, Shaun makes off with the Farmer's discarded magic kit and performs a series of funny tricks culminating in quickly turning himself, the sheep, and Bitzer invisible so that the Farmer won't discover what they are up to in the barn. This episode falls under the Halloween theme more because of its magical content than from any frightening parts, and both kids and parents will enjoy its visual humor and silly sight gags.

Things That Go Bump is easily the scariest episode collected on this Shaun the Sheep DVD, and younger viewers might be truly frightened by some parts of it, at least on an initial viewing. On a dark, rainy night, the sheep begin to be spooked by the eerie noises they are hearing. Bitzer scares them by showing up with a sheet over his head, but he has only come to lull them back to sleep with a bedtime story. When Bitzer, too, is spooked by the sight of a glove running around by itself, the sheep wake up and face a frightening, floating lit jack-o-lantern and more scary noises. However, when Shaun discovers who is terrorizing the sheep, he turns the tables and sets up a scare of his own.

In Heavy Metal Shaun, the Farmer unwisely leaves a metal detector where Shaun can get to it, which leads to piles of random unearthed metal objects and a furious bull who must be placated by any means necessary.

In Troublesome Tractor, Bitzer does not like Shaun's plan to make over the Farmer's old, ailing tractor into the snazzy machine of the man's dreams until the plan appears to work, appears being the key word.

In Sheepwalking, Shaun sleepwalks through a series of terrifying situations, followed closely by the rest of the flock and eventually Bitzer, who are trying to look out for him. But in the end, it is only Shaun who gets a good night's rest.

Shaun the Sheep Little Sheep of Horrors DVD Review

Overall, this Shaun the Sheep DVD will provide families with fun family-friendly Halloween entertainment with only a few real scares. Some parents may disapprove of a few moments of gross humor (like a spit-covered pacifier and a fart joke), but for the most part each episode contains only laughs and mildly spooky thrills.
